What are Shadow Beliefs?

Breakthrough Shadow Coaching is about helping you make peace with the beliefs that have kept you from living the life you want. A shadow belief is a term originally coined by psychologist Carl Jung and adopted by Debbie Ford, to define the unconscious limiting beliefs that influence our lives – telling us what we can and cannot do, guiding our behaviors. Shadows are negative beliefs hiding from our conscious, dictating our choices and stealing the opportunity for us to live our best life.

You feel like you’re looking out on the world, watching everyone look so happy – but at the same time you’re questioning why you aren’t out there with them. You work hard, you’re a model employee, loyal friend yet there’s something that makes you different.

The Shadow, hidden deep inside – formed early in your life, most likely during an event or situation from your childhood that you weren’t sure how to handle. Where you suppressed the feelings of discomfort, hurt, or fear, creating a Shadow Belief deep in your unconscious. Once the Shadows form they begin to sway your decisions unknowingly – decisions that will impact the life you live.

How the Shadow works:

You do everything humanly possible to please everyone around you, or maybe to prove yourself. You’ll do anything for friends at the drop of a hat. You work your tail off trying to be a great employee. ALWAYS making sure your friends, family and co-workers are satisfied. Doing anything and everything to be the best you can.

But, as you watch everyone around you going about their lives with ease, you say to yourself, “helping people feel good and should make me happy right?” Why do you think this, if you aren’t feeling the results? Putting everyone else before yourself is the result of a limiting belief, trying to prove that you are a helpful, loyal hardworking person is holding you back.

You look back at your childhood, and remember all the names you were called, telling yourself, you would never actually be what people said. They all had such negative connotation and by trying to avoid them, you let those names control your life. Without knowing it, the choices you’ve made were all determined by a few words, “sissy”, “faggot”, “stupid”, “fat boy”. Suppressing these memories until now, you never realized how they could impact your adult life. Hiding from your conscious – these limiting beliefs, let your Shadow control the decisions impacting how you live your life.

Discovering the cause of your shadows is just the first step. If you keep running from the shadows your choices will continue to be dictated by them and you’ll still feel undeserving. Instead of ignoring your shadows and negating your self-worth you will learn the tools to embrace your shadows.
